Beyond Mere Convergence

چکیده
In this article, I suggest that calculus instruction should include a wider variety of examples of convergent and divergent series than is usually demonstrated. In particular, a number of convergent series, such as ∑ k≥1 k3 2k , are considered, and their exact values are found in a straightforward manner. We explore and utilize a number of mathematical topics, including manipulation of certain power series and recurrences. During my most recent spring break, I read William Dunham’s book Euler: The Master of Us All [3]. I was thoroughly intrigued by the material presented and am certainly glad I selected it as part of the week’s reading. Of special interest were Dunham’s comments on series manipulations and the power series identities developed by Euler and his contemporaries, for I had just completed teaching convergence and divergence of infinite series in my calculus class. In particular, Dunham [3, p. 47-48] presents Euler’s proof of the Basel Problem, a challenge from Jakob Bernoulli to determine the

From the beginning of photography, various views were presented about the relationship between the body and photography, most of which focused on body as the subject of photography. Although such views address significant aspects of photography, very few studies have concentrated on the photographer’s body in creating works of art. Focusing on the concept of bodily perception, which is a bodily...
متن کاملOn Monotonic Convergence to Stability
The paper introduces, for age-distribution population vectors, a class of distances to the stable equivalent; each of these distances converges monotonically to zero as the population approaches stability. The Kullback distance, considered earlier to be unique as a measure with this property, turns out to be a mere specimen of this class. It is shown that the very feature of monotonic convergen...
متن کاملComplexity Matching in Dyadic Interaction
Conversation is a complex coordination of human behaviours (Riley, Richardson, Shockley, & Ramenzoni, 2011). Recent theoretical discussion of dyadic coordination has focused on issues of synchronization, entrainment, alignment, and convergence. All of these terms refer to a local matching of specific behavioural and linguistic events, such that members of a dyad coordinate by “doing the same th...
متن کاملOn the Trend to Equilibrium for Some Dissipative Systems with Slowly Increasing a Priori Bounds
We prove convergence to equilibrium with explicit rates for various kinetic equations with relatively bad control of the distribution tails : in particular, Boltzmann-type equations with (smoothed) soft potentials. We compensate the lack of uniform in time estimates by the use of precise logarithmic Sobolevtype inequalities, and the assumption that the initial datum decays rapidly at large velo...

The Nature of Comparative Research in Philosophy of Education: Faaraabee's Method M.H. Mirzaamohammadi, Ph.D. Comparative research, from a philosophical perspective in education, goes beyond the mere comparison of two ideas or subjects, and necessitates both judgment and critical analysis. Considering the complexities of the educational processes, doing comparative research in educati...
